Description
A water bed fill and drain kit is a universal multi-piece maintenance system designed to connect a standard residential indoor faucet to a waterbed mattress. It acts as a specialized plumbing bridge, utilizing hydraulic mechanics (the Venturi effect) to both power-fill a mattress without spills and vacuum-drain a heavy mattress completely flat for easy moving.
Core Kit Components & Anatomy
A standard universal kit contains three precision-molded components that link together with a standard garden hose:
- The Faucet Adapter: A threaded brass or high-impact plastic converter piece. It screws directly into the threads of a kitchen or bathroom sink faucet once the standard mesh aerator is twisted off, creating an instant male garden hose thread.
- The Perfect Union (Mattress Adapter): A flanged, screw-on collar cap that attaches to the bed-side end of your hose. It snaps securely over the universal outer ridge of the waterbed’s vinyl fill valve, locking the hose down to form a completely water-tight, high-pressure seal.
- The Super Siphon Pump (Venturi Pump): A specialized T-shaped valve block that attaches directly underneath the faucet adapter. When sink water passes through this valve body into the drain, it generates a powerful natural vacuum suction that pulls water upward from the bed over long distances without needing electrical power.
Operational Procedures
1. How to Fill the Mattress
- Twist the mesh aerator off your indoor faucet and screw on the faucet adapter.
- Connect your garden hose to the faucet adapter and run the other end to the bed.
- Thread the Perfect Union adapter onto the bed-side hose end and snap it firmly into the mattress valve.
- Turn on the water (aiming for lukewarm, around 70°F to 85°F) and fill the mattress until the water line sits roughly 1 inch below the top perimeter foam or wood rail. Add your liquid waterbed conditioner right before finishing.
2. How to Drain the Mattress (The Vacuum Process)
- Unplug your waterbed heater before beginning to prevent the element from dry-burning.
- Attach the T-shaped siphon pump to your faucet adapter. Connect your garden hose to the side intake port of the siphon pump.
- Connect the other end of the hose to the mattress using the Perfect Union.
- The Secret Step: Turn on the kitchen faucet for 60 seconds to force water into the bed first. This purges all trapped air from the hose line to prevent an air lock.
- While the water is actively running, pull down or twist the bottom bell housing on the siphon pump. The faucet water will now shoot straight down into the sink drain, creating a powerful vacuum that begins siphoning water out of the bed.
- Keep the tap running until the mattress looks like a completely flat, wrinkled, vacuum-sealed bag. This is critical for wave-reduced mattresses, as it collapses the internal fiber baffles so they do not shift or bunch up when you fold the vinyl bed.
